Examples of Outstanding Problem Solving and Creativity at Cedar Ridge

Mr. Jackson's Advanced Ceramics students are working on human form sculptures, which will eventually be painted and fired. Each of the students already completed a ceramic sculpture of an animal of their choice, which were amazing! Click on the pictures so you can see them enlarged so you can enjoy the sculptures better!

Spanish 3 PAP Virtual Fieldtrip, Collaboration Law Enforcement & Construction Tech, and New Grandbaby

I want to introduce my newest family member- Noah! Noah is my first grandchild, born to my daughter, Leah and her husband, Mark. He was born Oct. 16, 2015. I had the privilege and joy of staying with them all last week to help out. I cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and got the pleasure of lots of rocking! It was awesome!

Our Spanish 3 Pre-Ap students are studying art and the Day of the Dead.  Ms. Dacarett wanted to provide the students with an opportunity to see the works of art that relate to the Day of the Dead, so she contacted the Mexic-Arte Museum.  They agreed to do a virtual field trip with the Spanish class via Skype. The field trip was lead by Olivia Tamzarian completely in Spanish, giving our students a chance to practice their vocabulary.  Students were able to ask questions and make comments to extend their learning. This was a wonderful opportunity to engage our students with a real world situation, to allow them to learn more about a different country's culture, and to give them a chance to improve their language skills, simultaneously.
Thank you, Ms. Dacarett, for providing such a wonderful enriching experience for our students.

The following message was shared by one of our Law Enforcement teachers, Mr. De La Rosa:
"I wanted to share with you some of the wonderful work that Mr. Little's Construction Technology classes are doing in the construction of the furniture of our much anticipated CRHS Courtroom. When the idea was born to have our very own CRHS mini courtroom, we never imagined that our very own Construction Technology students would be up to the task to actually build the furniture itself. The programs joined forces, plans and measurements were taken, and the Construction students got to work on what our Law students had envisioned. Thus far, they have done an amazing job and presently, the courtroom furniture is near completion. The best part of this project has been the collaboration between both programs, who would have ever thought that the Law & Safety and Construction Technology students would be working on a joint project together? This is just another example of the talent and hard work of are very own CRHS students. Thought I would share some of the photos of the Construction Technology students hard at work finishing the courtroom furniture."

Thank you, Mr. De La Rosa and Mr. Little for great collaboration and for providing our students with great "real-world" experiences!

Hispanic Heritage Month Activities in Spanish Class

The following has been shared by Ms. Dacarett (formerly, Ms. Rubio)-

"In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month which started on September 15 (marking the independence day of Central America the 16 of Mexico) and runs to October 15; we are having Hispanic guest speakers come and talk about the American dream in the eyes of the Hispanics.

Thanks to the collaboration of Rachel Sotello our turn out has been excellent. We have had several speakers come to my Spanish Pre-Ap classes and on October 13 we will also have Dr. Flores come and talk about the American dream in the eyes of Hispanics.

I also contacted the Hispanic Chamber of commerce and they sent me interviews that I will play through the year. I would like our students to have a positive image of immigrants no matter where they come from. I don't want them to just learn tolerance, but to feel like they can embrace and understand other cultures, which is what has chiseled this country."

Guest speakers included the following:
  • Claudio Cruz- former RRISD School Board Member, who retired from the military and education
  • Rigo Valles- a Round Rock Police Officer, who has served as a district Student Resource Officer (SRO) for several years
  • David Contreras- LaunchPad founder, who worked in Washington, D.C. under the George W. Bush adminstration
  • Arnold Barrera- present Principal of Callison Elementary
  • Daniel Hernandez- founder of First Crush Tastings
  • Mario De La Rosa- Cedar Ridge High School Law Enforcement teacher and former federal agent
  • Rebecca Contreras- founder of Avante Garde and worked at the Texas state capitol for Ann Richards and Kay Bailey Hutchinson, as well as worked at the White House for George W. Bush
  • Michelle Cervantes- born, raised, and educated in Austin, Texas and an active member/leader in a variety of civic and community organizations
  • Dr. Steve Flores- Round Rock ISD Superintendent
  • Officer Morales- Round Rock Police Department and Student Resource Officer (SRO) for Cedar Ridge High School
  • Elsa Zabrano- Chief Human Resources Officer at Sitel
  • Diana Maldonado- elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2008 as the first female and Latina to represent House District 52. She is also the former President of the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees

Please congratulate our five Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program!

Over 1.5 million students took the 2014 PSAT (Preliminary SAT) last year. Of those 1.5 million students, 50,000 highest scoring students were identified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Some 16,000 of those were designated as National Merit Semifinalists and 34,000 of these high performers are now named Commended Students on the basis of scoring at or above the Index score of 202.

David Choi is deciding between UT Austin and Cornell University. He wishes to study Chemical Engineering.
Alexandra Blount is hoping to attend Texas Women's University. She plans to study Music.
Colson Ginger plans to attend Texas A & M University and he plans to study Ocean Engineering.
Amy Neusaenger has decided to attend Texas A & M University. She plans to eventually study psychiatry.
Khoi Huynh plans to attend UT Austin to study Biology.

Cedar Ridge is very proud to have five National Merit Semifinalist and five Commended National Merit Students! We will be presenting and honoring these exceptional students prior to our Varsity Football Game at Kelly Reeves Stadium, November 6.

Our fabulous Cedar Ridge Choir is presenting three performances of their Jazz Cafe.  Tonight's performance was wonderful. You'll hear beautiful harmonizing, as well as beautiful solos! Ms. Chamblee and I were delighted to be served appetizers and a dessert, as well, which made the night even more special. Don't miss our wonderful Headliners and Choir perform! If you missed tonight's performance, you can still catch one of the two performances tomorrow: Oct. 3 at 3:00 pm, and Oct. 3 at 7:00 pm. Don't miss their show!

The new 6-weeks grading period starts on Monday, October 5. We plan on providing certificates to all students during that 6-weeks period who have perfect attendance, so please encourage your child(ren) to be here every day.
